Working Through and Processing

After the reaction stage comes the working-through-and-processing stage. Once people go through the previous two stages, they often find themselves unwilling to discuss what they have experienced any further. Trauma victims recognize that they need to come to terms with what happened, but this process is largely internal. Though the shock and reaction stages can end fairly quickly, the working-through stage can take much longer. Dealing with grief after a traumatic loss can require years or even decades of handling each day as it comes.

This is also the stage where people are moving on with their lives. While they may be preoccupied with thoughts about what happened in the first few months, this gradually changes as the daily business of living pushes those thoughts into the background. As they become aware that feelings of traumatic loss are occurring less frequently, it also becomes possible to recognize that they are making progress in their recovery.

That does not mean that strong emotions will entirely disappear. There will always be reminders that will trigger flashbacks, memories, and feelings of guilt, but they will occur less frequently as the person works through his or her trauma.
